According to Fox News, three Republican members in Michigan’s House of Representatives filed impeachment articles of Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Beau LaFave tweeted, “Today I introduced Articles of Impeachment against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.”
LaFave wrote in the post that the four articles of impeachment against the Michigan governor include failure to respect the separation of powers by superseding the legislative branch, violation of the constitutional rights of people living in Michigan, issuance of executive orders against the interests of the state and its people, and use of state resources as a reward to political allies.
He continued, “We’re not the party that impeaches someone because we’re upset with policies that they’ve enacted.”
The Republican members thought it was shameful what the left-wing party did to President Trump in the previous year. “I would assume that any attempt by Republicans right now, with the current set of facts that we have to impeach the governor, would be on the same level,” LaFave added.
Fox News reported that not all Michigan GOP’s agree with the calls for impeachment. State House Speaker Lee Chatfield called the move a “distraction from the real things we have to get done in our state.”
Although the governor’s order on a partial shutdown dismayed Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Rep. Chatfield, both expressed eagerness to work in a “bipartisan way.”
In a statement on Sunday, Chatfield said, “As always, we stand ready to act in a bipartisan way when the government decides it is worth her time.”
However, Chatfield also clarified the order’s details are still currently under their review “like everyone else.”
