On Monday, Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court and sworn in as the court’s newest associate justice. Of course, after doing everything they could to stop it from happening and still failing, the Democrats exploded in anger.
They vowed to retaliate and blamed the Republicans for escalating tribalism in American politics.
In response, conservative commentator and lawyer Ben Shapiro gave the Democrats a brutal history lesson.
Democratic Representative Ilhan Oman said that expanding the Supreme Court and filling it with liberal justices is necessary because it will fix the “broken system.”
“Remember that Republicans have lost 6 of the last seven popular votes, but have appointed 6 of the last nine justices,” Omar claimed. “By expanding the court, we fix this broken system and have the court better represent the values of the American people.”
On the other hand, Democratic Senator Chris Coons said that the Dems should not stop at the Supreme Court — they should fill the entire federal judiciary with liberal justices.
As usual, here comes Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who would never miss an opportunity like this to let her opinion be known. According to her, the Republicans are “bulldozing” their plan into reality.
“Expand the court,” she said right after the Senate confirmed Barrett.
“Republicans do this because they don’t believe Dems have the stones to play hardball like they do. And for a long time, they’ve been correct. But do not let them bully the public into thinking their bulldozing is normal, but a response isn’t. There is a legal process for expansion,” she added.
Shapiro was quick to point out that the Democrats began the political escalation years ago — particularly in the Senate. The chickens are now coming home to roost, he said.
According to Shapiro, the Democrats have no one else to blame for the political environment but themselves. They have made it possible for the Senate to confirm judges like Barrett.
“The funniest part about this tweet is that Democrats were first to destroy judicial candidates for mere interpretational disagreement, the first to use the filibuster against judges, and the first to nuke the filibuster against judges…but she thinks the Republicans started it,” Shapiro wrote, referring to Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet.
And that’s the truth — the Democrats in the Senate have spent decades tearing down conservative-leaning judges nominated to the federal judiciary.
The best example of this was in the fall of 2018 during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation. The Democrats accused him of unsubstantiated claims that he was a serial sexual assaulter.
Another incident was in 2013 when then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid involved the “nuclear option” to lower the required number of votes to approve federal judges. Of course, this was done as revenge against the Senate Republicans for blocking many of then-President Barack Obama’s executive nominees.
Before, judges and executive nominees needed at least three-fifths approval — 60 votes in the Senate — to end the debate their confirmation. However, because the Democrats changed the rules, a smaller majority of 51 votes are now required to end the debate on the confirmation.
A year later, the Democrats had confirmed 89 federal judges using the rules they rewrote themselves.
After the Democrats changed the rules, then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell warned them, saying, “You’ll regret this — and you may regret this a lot sooner than you think.”
Well, he was definitely right.
